Likeweiß Chardonnay

German white wines on BIB (bag-in-box) are the leading market category in Norway, and the client wanted to offer something new in this segment to stand out from the competition. We were asked to develop a brand identity, naming, and packaging for a Chardonnay from Pfalz in a 3-liter BIB.

Chardonnay is the world’s most planted wine grape and originated in France, where the most notable examples are from. Because of a warmer climate, it is now possible to grow this popular grape in south-west Germany. Our goal was to find a way to tell this story and to create a concept where naming and design would merge into a memorable identity.

We saw a possibility of starting a conversation about where wine traditionally comes from and the consequences of climate change on the future of wine. As wine is first and foremost an agricultural product, it is vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and with the rising temperatures, growers are struggling with maintaining varieties in certain regions, and new areas are becoming more suited for some grapes. We called the concept “Wine from a changing world”.

Wine from a changing world

Extreme weather pushes viticulture into colder northern territories and forces traditional winemaking regions to adapt. Wines from northern climates are emerging as serious contenders, while regions like Bordeaux and Rioja are grappling with hotter weather, overripe grapes and water shortages. The shift is forcing the wine world to rethink long-standing assumptions about terroir — the interplay of soil, climate and human craft that has defined wine’s identity for centuries.
Europe’s past climatic stability allowed the concept of terroir to flourish, elevating wine from a commodity to an expression of place and culture. But global warming has irrevocably changed this. “If you love Bordeaux wines of the 1970s, those are gone forever,” says Elizabeth M. Wolkovich. “We don’t get to have the climate we had in the 1950s... so we don’t get to have the wines that people loved of that era”.
Rising temperatures have brought forward the veraison, when grape skins mature from green to yellow or purple, prompting growers to harvest earlier. A database of harvest dates from Beaune in Burgundy dating back to 1354 reveals that, since 1988, harvests in the region have occurred on average 13 days earlier than the prior historical baseline.

To add to the wine's attitude, we chose to play with a cheeky and associative name,”Likewise”, and to give a nod to its more established neighbour country, France. The illustrations contribute to the playful and inviting personality.

The illustrations focus on the vineyard, the terroir, the winemaking process, and suggest a serving situation where the Bib is proudly presented at a restaurant table, trying to demystify the idea that Bag-in-box is just about convenience, and communicate that allows for a reduction of carbon footprint by 80% compared to 75cl bottles.

To further make this a conscious “wine of the future”, we implemented the new EU regulations of keeping the printing areas to less than 40% and using no covering varnish. The paper is made of 40% post-consumer waste, FSC certified, acid, chlorine, and heavy metal free.
