Theaterbaren

Since 1899, Nationaltheatret has been a stage for the finest in Norwegian performing arts. From Henrik Ibsen's timeless dramas to contemporary experimental productions, the theatre has shaped Norway's cultural identity.
The building stands as a landmark of Historicism - a dialogue between past and present. Neo-Baroque grandeur meets neo-Rococo interiors, classical Greek and Roman ornament, and Art Nouveau vitality.

When commissioned to create the identity for a new public bar in the theatre’s second-floor foyer, the challenge was twofold: to honor the architectural and cultural significance of the institution while introducing a space that felt social, playful, and open to all, not only theatre audiences.

The strategic idea was to treat formality not as something to soften, but as something to stage. The theatre has always operated through ritual and unspoken rules — how one enters, observes, and is observed. Here, the ordinary becomes ceremonial. Theaterbaren identity extends this performative logic. Everyday gestures—raising a glass, lowering one’s voice, exchanging a glance — become a cue within a subtle choreography.

The interior and visual identity are built directly on the theatre’s language. Using existing materials and collaborating with local artisans. Motifs drawn from curtains, mirrors, chandeliers, and florals evolve into a flexible visual vocabulary. Rather than replicating ornament, we reinterpret it — exaggerating proportions, simplifying forms, and introducing saturated accents into an otherwise historically grounded palette. The hand-drawn quality of the illustrations introduces movement and improvisation, bridging historical elegance with theatrical playfulness.

Reinterpreting 1889 heritage through playful illustrations

We have intentionally looked for a sense of melodrama in the illustrations—ornaments exaggerated, forms simplified, and colors unapologetically saturated—mirroring the heightened emotions of the stage, to create a distinctly theatrical visual language.

Motifs drawn from the original site are reimagined as playful symbols: columns adorned with drama & comedy masks pay homage to the theatre’s logo; the letter T shaped by a curtain rope; and a flower basket, inspired by the bas-relief in the ceiling, hints at decadence, intertwined with a spider’s web.

Manon Cezaro’s hand-drawn techniques, with their looseness and expressiveness, invite curiosity, improvisation, and delight—creating a bridge between sophistication and spectacle.

Typography carries this philosophy into gesture. Inspired by the expressive calligraphy of Louis Barbedor, dramatic thick-and-thin strokes are reinterpreted in a contemporary script, bringing rhythm, pause, and flourish to menus, signage, and digital platforms.

The language of theatre extends into programming and social media through playful terminology such as I kulissene (“Backstage”), Suffløren (“The Prompter”), and Gjengangere (“Ghosts”)—a subtle nod to Ibsen. This immersive layer deepens the cultural connection while maintaining an inviting, accessible tone.

The bar reclaims the word foyer, historically meaning “hearth” — a place of warmth and gathering. Reimagined as a social center, it becomes a space where stories continue to unfold between acts.

To deepen engagement, we developed an illustrated map of the interior, integrated into the menu, highlighting both original architectural details and new interventions. Alongside it, a playful set of ten “etiquette rules” reinforces the theatrical spirit while gently guiding behavior.

A Visual World Between Spotlights: our visual direction balances nostalgic heritage with unapologetic playfulness. A palette that recalls history, yet surprises with unexpected accents. Symmetry and order that invite curiosity.

Storytelling that moves between elegance and irony.
It is about finding beauty in imperfection—honoring legacy while allowing room for play. The atmosphere feels cinematic, detailed, and slightly surreal: a world within a world, a space between spotlights where stories linger and new ones begin.

The illustrations embody a vivid collision of heritage and festivity. Ornaments are exaggerated, forms simplified, colors saturated. There is melodrama—a knowing theatricality—balanced by the looseness of the hand-drawn line. Sophistication meets spontaneity. Ritual meets improvisation.

Practical considerations, such as maintaining quiet during performances, are addressed through dramatized “house etiquette,” turning instruction into playful storytelling. Guests are not merely visitors; they become participants in a shared performance.

Theaterbaren transforms etiquette into storytelling, formality into playful drama, and tradition into engagement. More than a service function within a historic building, it becomes a social stage in its own right—honoring the theatre’s legacy while inviting a broader audience into its world.

The result positions Theaterbaren as a living extension of Nationaltheatret: a place where guests do not simply visit, but take part in the Theaterbaren universe.

Theaterbaren does not simply reference heritage — it performs it. Etiquette becomes storytelling. Formality becomes delight. Tradition becomes playful stage direction.

It is a space where guests do not merely visit — they participate. Where the hearth glows, the curtain rises, and every evening becomes a small act in an ongoing play.
